Chapter 76
No.1
The Dean's office at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine smelled of lemon polish and nervous sweat.
August Chambers sat in a high-backed leather chair, his posture radiating absolute, untouchable power. He casually slid a heavy,cream-colored folder across the polished mahogany desk.
The Dean, a balding man with wire-rimmed glasses, opened the folder. His eyes instantly locked onto the cashier's check nestled inside. The number 50,000,000.00 USD was printed in bold, undeniable black ink.
The Dean's breath hitched. He looked up, instantly pasting on a wide, incredibly accommodating smile.
"Mr. Chambers," the Dean practically gushed, his voice trembling slightly with greed. "Your generosity is simply staggering. The entire JHU medical network will forever be in your debt. This grant will revolutionize our Al research capabilities."
August didn't smile back. He looked at the Dean with the cold, evaluating eyes of a man buying a piece of meat.
"I expect the funds to be utilized efficiently," August said, his voice a low, authoritative rumble. "And, as we discussed on the phone, I have a minor...structural suggestion for the Aethel collaboration team."
The Dean swallowed hard. He knew exactly what this was. It was a bribe wrapped in a philanthropic bow.
"Of course, Mr. Chambers," the Dean said quickly, nodding his head. "We are always open to suggestions from our most esteemed benefactors."

"I strongly recommend that Allena Mills be integrated into the core team," August stated, leaning forward slightly to press his dominance. "Her clinical experience and her... unique perspective will be invaluable to the project's success."
The Dean hesitated for a fraction of a second. He knew Allena's reputation was currently burning in the tabloid fires. He knew Dr. Gottlieb had explicitly banned her from the building. But fifty million dollars
could buy a lot of fire extinguishers.
"I understand completely," the Dean agreed, closing the folder and pulling it safely to his side of the desk."We will create a specialized role for Ms. Mills immediately. I will personally coordinate with the Aethel representatives."
August stood up, adjusting his platinum cufflink. A cold, victorious smirk touched his lips. "Excellent. I knew you were a man of vision, Dean."
Three days later.
The primary executive conference room at JHU was packed. The air was thick with the hum of laptops and the tense energy of top-tier academics and tech executives.
Elisa stood at the front of the room, illuminated by the glow of a massive digital whiteboard. She wore a tailored black suit, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, professional knot. She held a digital stylus, rapidly drawing out the complex neural network architecture that would allow Project Chiron to interface with JHU's raw patient data.
Her voice was calm, authoritative, and razor-sharp.

She didn't use notes. She spoke the language of advanced algorithms with the fluency of a native speaker.
Sitting in the front row, Professor Sterling Finch-the lead researcher for JHU-was nodding vigorously, his eyes wide with genuine academic awe.
Sitting three seats down from Professor Finch was Allena.
Allena was wearing a pristine, incredibly expensive white blazer. She was sitting up perfectly straight, holding a pen over a blank notepad, desperately trying to look like she belonged there. But her eyes were glazed over. She couldn't understand a single word Elisa was saying. The complex math and architecture were completely alien to her. The only thing visible in her eyes was a dark, burning, toxic jealousy.
Elisa drew the final connection line on the board and set the stylus down.
"That concludes the data ingestion pathway," Elisa stated, looking out over the room. "Are there any questions regarding the security protocols?"
Professor Finch immediately started clapping. The rest of the JHU team joined in.
"Brilliant, Ms. Wilder," Professor Finch praised, his voice loud and enthusiastic. "The architecture is flawless. It completely bypasses the latency issues we were worried about."
Before Elisa could respond, the heavy double doors at the back of the conference room swung open.

The Dean walked in, followed closely by August Chambers.
The ambient chatter in the room died instantly.Elisa's black eyes locked onto August. She felt a cold, familiar spike of disgust in her stomach, but her face remained a mask of absolute stone. Alastair, sitting at the table, subtly shifted his weight, his eyes narrowing.
"Apologies for the interruption, everyone," the Dean announced, walking to the front of the room with a wide, artificial smile. "But I have a very exciting announcement regarding the future of this project."
The Dean turned and gestured grandly toward August.
"Thanks to a historic, fifty-million-dollar research grant from the Chambers Group," the Dean declared loudly, "we are expanding our operational capabilities."
A smattering of polite, incredibly awkward applause rippled through the academics. Everyone in the room knew what that money meant. They all looked at Allena.
"Furthermore," the Dean continued, his smile straining slightly. "After careful consideration, JHU has decided to invite Dr. Allena Mills to join the core collaboration team. She will serve as our... Clinical Data Consultant."
It was a perfectly fabricated, meaningless title. It sounded important enough to satisfy August's ego,but vague enough to keep her away from the actual coding.
Allena immediately stood up. She offered a gracious, sickeningly sweet smile to the room, nodding her head. When she looked at Elisa, her eyes flashed with pure, arrogant triumph. She had bought her way into Elisa's sanctuary.

Professor Finch's brow furrowed deeply. He looked at Elisa and Alastair, hisexpression filled with silent, apologetic agony. He was a scientist, not a politician;he hated this.
Alastair placed his hands on the table, preparing to stand up and verbally eviscerate the Dean.
But Elisa reached out and gently placed her hand over Alastair's wrist, stopping him.
She stepped away from the whiteboard. She walked slowly toward the center of the room, stopping.directly in front of the Dean and August. Her posture was perfectly relaxed, but she radiated a terrifying, lethal coldness.
"Mr. Chambers," Elisa said, her voice echoing clearly in the silent room. "We are all incredibly moved by your...financial generosity."
August lifted his chin, looking down at her with a smug, victorious sneer. "I am always happy to support genuine talent, Ms. Wilder."
Elisa didn't blink. She turned her gaze to the Dean.
"Dean," Elisa said, her voice dropping to a sharp,
interrogative pitch. "I have a critical question regarding Ms. Mills' new role. As the Chief Technical Advisor for Aethel, I need to know the exact parameters of a 'Clinical Data Consultant."
No.6
The Dean sweated slightly. "Well, Ms. Wilder, she will be providing...oversight."
"Does this oversight include administrative access to the core Chiron algorithm?" Elisa demanded, her words hitting like hammer strikes. "Does she have read-and-write permissions for the encrypted patient databases?"
The question was a lethal trap. If Allena had access, she could destroy the project.
The Dean panicked. He looked at August, then at Professor Finch. "Ah,well, the permissions are..."
Elisa cut him off, turning her terrifying gaze directly onto Professor Finch.
"Professor Finch," Elisa commanded, her voice ringing with absolute authority. "Is she touching my code?"
Professor Finch stood up. He took a deep breath, his
academic integrity finally overriding his fear of the Dean.
"No, Ms. Wilder," Professor Finch stated firmly, looking Elisa right in the eye. "Ms. Mills will be restricted to reviewing sanitized, preliminary clinical outputs. She will have absolutely zero access to the core algorithm, the secure servers, or the raw patient data. Her permissions are strictly read-only, and heavily firewalled."

Allena's smug smile instantly vanished. Her face flushed red with humiliation. She had been publicly demoted to a glorified proofreader in front of the entire team.
Elisa stared at Professor Finch for three long seconds.
"Academic purity requires constant vigilance,Professor," Elisa said, her voice a freezing whisper that carried across the room. "I expect that firewall to be made of solid titanium. Because if a single line of my code is compromised by incompetence, Aethel will burn this partnership to the ground."
Professor Finch nodded solemnly. "You have my
absolute guarantee, Ms. Wilder."
Elisa turned her back on August and Allena, completely dismissing them. She picked up her digital stylus. "Now. Let's get back to actual work."
