Chapter 67

The study was cavernous and suffocatingly dark. The only illumination came from a dying fire in the massive stone hearth, the embers casting erratic,blood-red shadows across the walls.

Sitting behind a colossal mahogany desk, looking like a monarch presiding over an execution, was Germaine Chambers.

She wore a dark silk robe. Her gnarled, heavily jeweled fingers were casually playing with an antique silver magnifying glass.

Resting perfectly centered on the polished wood of the desk, illuminated by a single brass reading lamp, were two distinct documents.

Elisa instantly recognized the thick, textured parchment of her Marriage Certificate, bearing the heavy embossed seal of New York State. Right next to it lay a stack of crisp, white medical records-documents that absolutely did not belong in the manor.

Elisa walked slowly toward the desk. She stopped three feet away, her eyes locked onto the documents.

"Stealing private legal documents from a locked safe," Elisa said, her voice a flat, freezing monotone."That is a federal felony, Germaine. Even your lawyers can't make that disappear."

Germaine let out a dry, rattling laugh. It sounded like dry leaves scraping across pavement.

"A federal felony?" Germaine mocked, leaning back in her high leather chair. "My dear, naive girl. In this zip code, the Chambers name is the law. The federal government asks my permission before they audit my charities."

Germaine reached out and placed her manicured finger directly on top of the Marriage Certificate.

"I know exactly why you came here tonight,"Germaine said, her voice dropping to a harsh, venomous whisper. "You wanted to take this piece of paper to the press. You wanted to prove you are the legal wife. You wanted to destroy Allena's little victim narrative."

Elisa didn't break eye contact. "I am going to clear my name. I am not going to let your son and his parasite ruin my life to cover up their own filth."

Germaine's eyes flashed with sudden, terrifying rage. She slammed her hand flat against the desk. The loud smack echoed in the quiet room.

"Your life?" Germaine hissed, leaning forward, her face twisting into a mask of pure aristocratic malice."Your life is entirely irrelevant! Do you have any idea what happened to the Chambers Group stock today when those photos leaked? We lost three percent of our market cap. Billions of dollars, erased in hours, because of a trashy taboloid scandal!"

Germaine stood up. She looked at Elisa with absolute disgust.

"The public has already decided you are the villain,"Germaine stated coldly. "The narrative is set. If you release this certificate now, it won't just destroy Allena. It will prove that August is a liar. It will prove the CEO of this family is a manipulative adulterer. The board of directors will crucify him, and the stock will freefall."

Germnaine pointed a shaking, furious finger at Elisa.

"I will not allow you to burn my family's empire to the ground just to save your pathetic pride. You are going to be the sacrifice. You are going to stay the villaín, and you are going to keep your mouth shut."

Elisa stared at the old woman. A cold, dark amusement flickered in her eyes.

"You are delusional," Elisa whispered. She took a step forward, reaching her hand out toward the desk to take her documents. "I am walking out of here with my property. Try to stop me."

Before Elisa's fingers could touch the parchment,Germaine's hand shot out like a striking snake. She slammed her palm down hard, pinning the stack of medical records to the wood.

"I didn't just open your safe, Elisa," Germaine said, her voice dropping to a terrifying, absolute calm."I also had my private investigators look into your weekly routine. And they found a very interesting file regarding a patient named Phineas."

"My family is the primary benefactor of the entire lvy League Medical Group," Germaine continued, her

eyes locking onto Elisa's, a cruel smile playing on her lips. "A position on the board of trustees grants one certain... privileges. It's amazing what you can find when you bypass patient confidentiality protocols.I know all about the old man's severe Alzheimer's. I also know that the experimental, highly expensive targeted therapy drug keeping him stable is entirely funded by a backdoor grant from the Chambers Medical Foundation."

"If you touch that certificate," Germaine whispered,"I will make a single phone call. And your grandfather, Phineas, will be violently evicted from the lvy League Memory Care Center before the sun comes up. The grant will be revoked. The medication stops tonight. Without it, the doctors say his brain will completely deteriorate in less than a month. He will die, Elisa. And he will die screaming in confusion."

Elisa's hand froze in mid-air.

The blood in her veins instantly turned to solid ice. A massive, suffocating weight crashed onto her chest, driving the air from her lungs.

Germaine smiled. It was a smile of pure, sadistic

victory. She saw the terror flash in Elisa's eyes.

"You evil, rotting bitch," Elisa breathed, the words tearing out of her throat like jagged glass.

Germaine didn't even blink at the insult. She simply pressed a button on her intercom.

"Agnes," Germaine called out. "Send them in."

The side door of the study opened. Three men in immaculate, thousand-dollar suits walked in carrying leather briefcases. They were senior partners from a top-tier white-shoe law firm. They moved like silent, efficient machines.

They approached the desk and laid out a thick stack of legal documents.

"This is an absolute, ironclad Non-Disclosure Agreement," Germaine explained, her voice retuning to a brisk, businesslike tone. "You will sign it. You will legally forfeit your right to ever publicly discuss your marriage to August, the divorce, or Allena Mills."

Germaine gestured to a second document.

No.7

"In exchange foryour silence, and your agreement to take the fall in the media," Germaine continued, "fifty

million dollars will be immediately wired into an offshore trust in your name. And your grandfather's medical care will be guaranteed for the rest of his natural life."

Germaine picked up a heavy Montblanc fountain pen and held it out toward Elisa.

"Sign the papers, Elisa," Germaine commanded.′′Okill your grandfather. The choice is yours."

Elisa looked at the pen. She looked at the NDA. She was trapped in a flawless, inescapable cage of pure capitalistic power.②
