Chapter 62
No.1
The estate's security control room was buried in the windowless basement of the main building. The air down here was stale, smelling faintly of ozone and hot electronics.
Elisa stood in the narrow, fluorescent-lit corridor outside the closed door of the control room. Two massive resort security guards stood on either side of her, their hands resting near their radios, treating her exactly like a violent criminal in custody.
A deep, rhythmic throbbing pulsed in Elisa's lower back. The impact against the stone pillar had left a massive, hot knot of damaged muscle right against her spine. She leaned her shoulder against the cold concrete wall, trying to take the weight off her legs.
At the other end of the narrow corridor stood Devon Browning.
He had brought a small entourage of wealthy socialites down with him. They stood in a tight cluster, arms crossed, staring down the hallway at
Elisa with eyes full of morbid, predatory excitement.
Inside the control room, the estate manager was sweating profusely as he typed on the keyboards.Upstairs, in the VIP medical suite, August was personally overseeing the doctor stitching Allena's calf.
The heavy silence in the corridor stretched on for ten agonizing minutes.
Devon couldn't handle the quiet. He swaggered a few steps forward, a cruel, mocking sneer twisting his face.

"What's the matter, Elisa?" Devon taunted, his voice echoing loudly off the concrete walls. "You look a little pale. Are you finally scared? Trying to think up a pathetic excuse for when that video shows you shoving her?"
Elisa slowly turned her head.
She looked at Devon. She didn't see a billionaire venture capitalist. She saw a loud, incredibly stupid piece of unrecyclable garbage.
"Mr. Browning," Elisa said. Her voice was a flat, dead
monotone. "Your verbal output is inversely proportional to your cognitive processing. A classic sign of systemic failure. I suggest a neurological evaluation before you short-circuit entirely."
The words hit Devon like a physical slap across the face.
His face instantly drained of color, then flushed a violent, mottled purple. The precision of her insult, the way she casually weaponized his own glaring incompetence, completely shattered his arrogant facade.
"You bitch," Devon snarled. He raised his hand, his body lunging forward, fully intending to strike her across the face.
Elisa didn't flinch. She didn't step back. Her black eyes instantly sharpened into two lethal points of obsidian.

"There is a camera in this hallway, too," Elisawarned, her voice dropping to a terrifying, freezing whisper."You lay one finger on me, Devon, and I guarantee this footage will be in every media inbox before the sun goes down, with the headline 'Billionaire's friend
physically assaults woman in public.' Guess how your family's investors will react to that?"
The sheer, dominant authority radiating from her small frame hit Devon like a brick wall.
He froze. Hisraised hand trembled in the air. He looked at her eyes and realized she wasn't bluffing. She would destroy him in the court of public opinion before he even took another breath. He slowly, furiously lowered his arm and took a step back, his jaw grinding so hard his teeth squeaked.
The socialites behind him shifted uncomfortably. They began to whisper, their voices dripping with venom.
"She has no shame," a woman in a Chanel suit muttered loudly. "She pushes a brilliant doctor down the stairs and acts like she owns the place."
"I heard she was just a nobody ER nurse before she trapped Mr. Chambers. She's just a desperate gold digger holding onto a marriage that's clearly over."
The toxic words washed over Elisa like dirty water.
She didn't even blink.

Her heart rate remained perfectly steady. In her mind, these people were already dead. Their intellect had been entirely rotted by inherited wealth and blind prejudice. They were not worth a single drop of her emotional energy.
Click.
The heavy metal door of the control room finally opened.
The estate manager walked out. He was holding a black tablet in his trembling hands. His face was completely ashen. Sweat beaded on his forehead.
Devon instantly pushed past the socialites and rushed the manager.
"Did you get it?" Devon demanded, his voice frantic with anticipation. "Play it! Show everyone exactly how she pushed Allena!"
The manager swallowed hard. His eyes darted nervously to Elisa, then back to Devon. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. He looked absolutely terrified.
Elisa pushed herself off the concrete wall. She stood
perfectly straight, ignoring the sharp spike of pain in her spine.

"Turn the tablet around," Elisa commanded, her voice steady and absolute. "Show them."
The manager wiped his sweating forehead with the back of his sleeve. He slowly rotated the tablet so the screen faced Devon and the crowd. He pressed play.
The high-definition security footage was crystal clear.
It showed Allena stepping into Elisa's path. It showed Allena aggressively grabbing Elisa's sleeve. It showed Elisa calmly, firmly shaking her arm free.
And then, it showed the truth.
It showed Allena standing perfectly still for a fraction of a second after the physical contact ended. Then, without a single ounce of external force touching her,Allena threw her arms into the air and violently launched her own body backward down the stairs.
It was a pathetic, incredibly obvious theatrical dive.
The video looped. And looped again.
The corridor went dead silent. It was the kind of heavy, suffocating silence that follows a bomb detonating. The socialites who had just been screaming for Elisa's blood suddenly looked like they had been collectively choked.

Devon's pupils dilated violently. He stared at the glowing screen. His mouth opened slightly, his brain completely short-circuiting as his entire reality regarding his "hero" shattered into pieces.
Elisa let out a short, breathy scoff. It was the coldest sound in the world.
"Did you all get a good look?" Elisa asked, her eyes sweeping over the paralyzed crowd. "Your holy, untouchable victim is nothing but a cheap, D-list actress."
Elisa reached her hand out to take the tablet from the manager. She needed that video file. It was the absolute proof she needed to clear her name.
Before her fingers could touch the glass screen, the sound of heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed from the far end of the corridor.
August Chambers walked out of the shadows.
He was wearing a fresh, perfectly tailored navy suit. Two massive private bodyguards walked a step behind him. His face was a mask of dark, impenetrable stone.
He didn't look at Devon. He didn't look at the crowd. He walked straight up to the estate manager.
August extended his large hand. His voice carried the heavy, absolute arrogance of a dictator who owned the very air in the room.

"Give me the tablet," August ordered.
The estate manager physically flinched. He didn't hesitate for a microsecond. He practically shoved the tablet into August's waiting hand, bowing his head in total submission.
Elisa's stomach violently dropped. The cold air in the hallway suddenly felt suffocating.
She looked at August's face. She saw the dark, calculating look in his eyes. She realized instantly that August hadn't come down here to find the truth. He had come down here to bury it.
