Chapter 42

No.1

Elisa took a slow sip of the scalding black coffee. The bitter liquid burned her tongue, but it grounded her.

She looked up at August's furious face. The sheer, staggering absurdity of his victim complex was almost fascinating. He genuinely believed the universe revolved around his paranoia.

"Mr. Chambers," Elisa said. Her voice was a flat, mechanical drone, devoid of any human inflection."You do not own the controlling shares of this medical facility. My presence here does not require your authorization."

August's eyes narrowed. The absolute indifference in her tone felt like a physical slap.

His gaze dropped involuntarily to the white medical tape on the back of her hand. He saw the faint, bluish bruising around the injection site. His stomach tightened, but he immediately forced the sensation down, replacing it with arrogant anger.

"Don't play games with me," August sneered, his upper lip curling. "Don't think dragging yourself in here and playing the dying swan is going to make me feel sorry for you. You brought that on yourself."

Elisa didn't blink. She looked at him the way one looks at a smear of dog feces on the sidewalk.

She didn't waste a single breath arguing. She turned her back on him and pressed the glowing down button for the VIP elevator. She needed to get off this floor before the air became too toxic to breathe.

The brushed steel doors slid open silently.

No.2

Elisa stepped into the empty cab. She reached out and pressed the button for the underground parking garage.

Just as the doors began to slide shut, a custom-made Italian leather dress shoe violently wedged itself into the narrow gap.

The safety sensors beeped sharply. The doors jerked back open.

August shoved his massive shoulders through the opening, stepping into the small, confined space of

the elevator. The doors closed behind him, sealing them in a steel box.

The elevator lurched downward. The sudden drop in gravity made Elisa's stomach swoop.

She immediately took a step backward, pressing her spine against the cold metal railing. The physical proximity to him made her skin crawl.

August watched her retreat. His jaw clenched. His hand reached into the inner pocket of his suit jacket.

He pulled out a small, white plastic pill bottle. It had no commercial label, only a stark, alphanumeric barcode printed on the side.

No.3

He took a heavy step toward her, closing the distance she had just created.

Before Elisa could react, August reached out and shoved the hard plastic bottle directly into the front pocket of her silk hospital scrubs. The movement was entirely non-consensual, a brutal invasion of her physical space.

Elisa's hand instantly/ clamped over her pocket. Her muscles coiled tight.

"What is wrong with you?" Elisa demanded, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper.

August reached up and casually adjusted his platinum cufflink, a gesture of supreme, relaxed control.

"It's a highly restricted, elite-tier recovery compound synthesized in Geneva," August stated, his tone dripping with the casual arrogance of a king distributing alms. "It's nearly impossible to procure.A hyper-concentrated immune booster and anti-inflammatory."

He looked down at her, his expression utterly devoid of empathy.

"Tate's allergies have been severe lately," August continued, stating it as if it were the most logical thing in the world. "I procured this specifically for him, but the dosage requires precise calibration.Don't play these pathetic games to garner sympathy.Whatever stunt you pulled to follow me here, your system is clearly inflamed. Consider this a favor. Take it. You should be grateful I'm allowing you access to

it. Just make sure you report back to me immediately if you experience any nausea or palpitations."

The words hung in the stale air of the elevator.

For exactly one second, Elisa's brain stopped functioning.

The,sheer, sociopathic horror of what he had just said paralyzed her vocal cords.

He wasn't giving her medicine to help her. He was using her. He was using his legally wedded wife-who had just nearly frozen to death because of him-as a convenient biological baseline, a disposable test subject to verify the side effects of a boutique supplement before he dared give it to his mistress's brother.

A cold, creeping terror started at the base of Elisa's spine and shot straight up into her skull.

This wasn't just selfishness. This was a complete absence of humanity. He viewed her as biological material.

Elisa's fingers began to tremble, not from the cold, but from a rage so absolute it felt like her blood was boiling inside her veins.

She shoved her hand into her pocket and violently

ripped the white bottle out.

August frowned, genuinely annoyed by her resistance.

"Don't be dramatic," August snapped, his voice echoing loudly in the small space. "You can't buy this on the open market. I'm doing you a favor by letting you use it. Stop looking at me like that."

Elisa took a deep, jagged breath. The air burned her lungs.

She looked up, her black eyes locking onto his.

"August," Elisa said, pronouncing each syllable with razor-sharp precision. "You are not just blind. You are a clinical sociopath."

August's face turned a violent, dark red. The insult hit his ego like a hammer. He opened his mouth to roar at her, his hands balling into massive fists.

Ding.

The elevator announced its arrival at the underground garage. The steel doors slowly slid open, letting in a rush of damp, concrete-scented air.

Elisa didn't step out.

She stood her ground. She raised her right hand, holding the white pill bottle directly between them.

She opened her fingers.

The bottle dropped. It hit the grooved metal floor of the elevator with a sharp clatter.

Elisa lifted her foot. She brought the hard rubber sole of her shoe down with explosive, devastating force directly onto the plastic bottle.

Crack.

The sound of the thick plastic shattering was incredibly loud. The white pills inside were instantly pulverized into fine, chalky dust, smearing across the metal floor.

August's eyes widened in shock. The blatant, violent destruction of his property-of his command-ignited a primal fury in him.

He lunged forward, his large hand reaching out to grab her shoulder, intending to physically subdue her.

Elisa anticipated the movement. Her body was still weak, her muscles trembling slightly from the residual chill of hypothermia, but her mind was terrifyingly sharp.

No.7

She twisted her torso sharply to the left, letting his heavy hand graze past her collarbone. She didn't attempt to match his brute strength. Instead, she used the aggressive forward momentum of his own lunge against him. In one fluid, desperate motion, she slammed her right elbow backward, driving the hard point of the bone into the tender inner side of his extended forearm. A jolt of sharp, electric pain shot up his arm, hitting a nerve cluster wvith shocking precision.

Thwack.

The impact was surgical and devastating. The sharp, stinging sound cracked through the garage as the nerve strike sent a shockwave of numbness straight up to his shoulder.

August hissed in pain, jerking his hand back.

Elisa stepped out of the elevator into the dim light of the garage.

She didn't look back.

"Save your poison for your dog," Elisa threw the words over her shoulder like a grenade.

She,walked away, her footsteps echoing loudly against the concrete, leaving August standing in the elevator, staring at the crushed white powder at his feet.
