Chapter 263

Elisa's words echoed in the empty, soundproofed corridor.

August's thick eyebrows crashed together, forming a deep, confused line above his nose.

"What divorce decree?" August snapped. He reached up and aggressively jerked his silk tie loose."What kind of pathetic game are you playing now?"

Elisa stared at him. Her eyes were completely dead."Drop the act. The family court issued the final decree three days ago."

A flicker of genuine shock broke through August's arrogant mask. He spun around, marched to his massive mahogany desk, and slammed his finger onto the intercom button.

"Get the legal department on the line," August roared at the speaker. "I want the exact status of my divorce case.Right now."

Elisa stood with her arms crossed tightly over her

chest. She watched the powerful CEO scramble. It was pathetic. He ruled a global empire, yet he had no idea his own mother was treating him like a toddler.

Less than a minute later, the intercom crackled. His executive assistant's voice trembled through the speaker.

"Sir... the system shows the final documents were generated. But they were intercepted and signed for by Madam Germaine's private office."

August slammed his fist down on the intercom, cutting the connection. His face flushed a dark, violent purple. The veins in his neck bulged against his collar. The realization that his mother had bypassed his authority in his own company made his stomach churn with humiliation.

He turned back to Elisa. His male pride refused to let him admit he had lost control.

"It is a minor bureaucratic delay," August lied smoothly, forcing his voice to remain steady. "I will handle it."

"I am not waiting on your bureaucracy," Elisa stepped forward, her presence suddenly dominating the large

office. "I want that document today."

August looked at her. He saw the absolute desperation in her eyes to be rid of him. A dark, ugly wave of jealousy gnawed at his ribs, burning his lungs.

"Are you in that much of a rush to spread your legs for that bastard Thorne?" August sneered. His eyes turned black with malice.③

"My personal life is no longer your concern," Elisa fired back, her voice like a whip. "This is a legal transaction."

August let out a cold, hollow laugh. He walked slowly around the desk until he was standing inches from her face. He looked down at her.

"You want me to authorize the release of that document?" August asked softly. "Fine. But you will earn it."

He reached into his suit pocket and pulled out a heavy, gold-embossed envelope.

"Tonight is Harrison Browning's eightieth birthday gala," August stated. "My grandmother demands you

attend as my wife to stabilize the stock prices."

Elisa stared at him in pure disbelief. "Are you insane? We are actively divorcing, and you want me to parade around a room full of billionaires?"

"It is Germaine's direct order," August replied coldly."You play the perfect, obedient wife one last time, and I will personally hand you the decree tomorrow morning."

He grabbed Elisa's wrist. His grip was painfully tight. He shoved the invitation into her palm and released her.

Elisa looked down at the gold lettering. It was the exact same invitation Brenda had thrown on the console table that morning. The sheer absurdity of the situation made her chest ache.

"If I walk through those doors tonight," Elisa said, her voice dropping to a lethal whisper, "you guarantee the document will be on my lawyer's desk at 8:00AM."

"I am August Chambers. I do not break my deals," he stated, adjusting his suit jacket to regain his posture of superiority.

Elisa shoved the invitation into her leather bag. She looked at him with absolute disgust.

"Remember this moment," Elisa said. "This is the last time I will ever clean up the messes of your disgusting family."

She turned around. She walked out of the office, her flat shoes hitting the carpet with heavy, deliberate force.

She stepped into the elevator and pressed the lobby button. As the steel doors slid shut, she saw August standing frozen in the middle of his office, his face twisted in dark fury.

The elevator dropped. Elisa leaned her back against the cold metal wall. A wave of bone-deep exhaustion washed over her. She pulled her phone from her bag and opened a background dossier on the Browning family. She had to survive this gala.
