Chapter 26

No.1

The black Maybach pulled up to the curb outside the towering, monolithic glass skyscraper that housed the Chambers Group headquarters on Wall Street.

Elisa stepped out. The wind howled through the concrete canyon, but she didn't button her coat. She held the brown leather envelope tightly against her side.

She walked through the revolving doors into the massive,thirty-foot-high marble lobby.

Usually, when she came here, she kept her head down, using the private executive elevator in the back to avoid drawing attention.

Not today.

She walked straight across the center of the lobby, the sharp click of her heels echoing off the marble walls.

She approached the main reception desk. The head receptionist, a woman who had always looked at Elisa with thinly veiled pity and disdain, immediately stood up, raising a hand to stop her.

"Mrs. Chambers, you can't go up," the receptionist said, her tone condescending. "Simon did inform us of your arrival, but Mr. Chambers is on a critical overseas call and reiterated that no one was to go

up under any circumstances. My apologies, but my hands are tied."

Elisa didn't stop walking.

She locked eyes with the receptionist, her gaze so cold and piercing that the woman physically flinched.

"I.am here on the direct orders of Madame Germaine," Elisa said, her voice echoing loudly enough for the nearby security guards to hear. She raised the brown envelope with the Chambers Legal seal. "Unless you want to call Germaine and tell her you're blocking her political assets, I suggest you step aside."

The receptionist's face paled at the mention of the matriarch. She quickly lowered her hand and stepped back.

Elisa swiped her biometric ring against the scanner. The private elevator doors slid open.

She stepped in and hit the button for the 68th floor.

The elevator shot upward, the pressure popping in her ears.

When the doors opened, the atmosphere on the executive floor was suffocatingly tense. The air smelled of ozone, expensive cologne, and high-stakes panic.

Simon,August's executive assistant, was pacing the hallway. When he saw Elisa step out, his eyes widened in panic.

He rushed forward, physically blocking the hallway leading to the CEO's office.

"Elisa, you cannot be here," Simon hissed, keeping his voice low. "He is in the middle of a ten-billion -dollar cross-border acquisition call with the Frankfurt board. It's a video conference. If you interrupt him, he will fire everyone on this floor."

Elisa stopped. She looked at her wristwatch.

"I have a meeting at Aethel in forty minutes," Elisa said flatly. "He has exactly ten minutes to sign this property transfer, or I call Germaine and tell her the deal is off."

Simon sneered, his loyalty to August making him arrogant. "You really think you can strong-arm him with a house?"

Elisa ignored Simon completely. She sidestepped him with fluid grace and walked straight down the hallway toward the massive, soundproof glass conference room.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass walls, she saw August.

He was standing at the head of a long obsidian table, his back to the window. He was wearing a stark white dress shirt, the sleeves rolled up,exposing his muscular forearms. He was speaking rapid, aggressive German into a high-end microphone, dominating the executives on the massive video screens.

Elisa walked right up to the glass wall.

She didn't knock. She didn't wave.

She simply sat down on the sleek leather waiting sofa positioned directly outside the glass. She crossed her legs, placed the brown envelope on her lap, and pulled out her phone.

Inside the room, August felt a shift in the light.

He turned his head slightly.

His eyes locked onto Elisa sitting just beyond the glass.

For a split second, his powerful, commanding posture faltered. He was shocked she had bypassed security.

Then, his eyes narrowed into slits of pure, arrogant defiance.

He decided to play his favorite game: psychological annihilation through absolute ignorance.

He turned his head back to the screens. He deliberately raised his voice, continuing his German presentation, completely acting as if the woman sitting ten feet away was entirely invisible. It was a power move designed to make her feel small, needy, and pathetic.

Elisa didn't even look up.

She opened an email from Alastair regarding the Chiron server migration. She began typing a complex technical response, her thumbs flying across the screen. Her face was a mask of absolute, serene focus.

Five minutes passed.

August was speaking, but his peripheral vision was entirely consumed by the grey suit outside the glass.

He waited for her to look up. He waited for her to fidget, to show anger, to show something.

She didn't. She was completely engrossed in her phone, utterly indifferent to his display of power.

A dark, irrational irritation began to boil in August's chest.

His right hand dropped from the table. His fingers found his platinum cufflink. He began to twist it,the metal grinding against his skin.

"Herr Chambers?" one of the German executives asked through the speakers, looking confused.

August realized he had stopped speaking mid-sentence. His brain had short-circuited, entirely distracted by the woman ignoring him.

His face flushed with sudden, hot embarrassment and rage.

He violently slammed his hand flat on the table.

"W/e will reconvene in one hour," August barked in English, cutting the feed instantly. The screens went black.

The heavy glass doors of the conference room slid open with a pneumatic hiss.

August stormed out. He radiated a dark, suffocating menace. He stopped directly in front of

Elisa, his massive frame blocking the overhead lights, casting her in shadow.

"You have exactly ten seconds to explain why you are interrupting a ten-billion-dollar merger,"August snarled, his voice a lethal whisper, "before I have security drag you out by your hair."

Elisa hit 'send' on her email.

No.7

She locked her phone, slipped it into her pocket, and slowly raised her head.

Her eyes met his. They were completely dead.

"Ten seconds is all I need," she said.
