Chapter 23
No.1
The call from Germaine had been as predictable as it was imperious. Less than an hour after her confrontation with August in the park, Elisa was summoned to the Long Island estate like a disobedient servant. The yellow taxi rattled as it merged onto the private, tree-lined road leading to the Chambers family's LongIsland estate.
Elisa sat in the back, staring blankly at the passing ancient oaks.
Suddenly, the taxi slammed on its brakes. The tires shrieked against the asphalt.
Elisa was thrown forward, her seatbelt biting sharply into her collarbone.
A massive, black Range Rover with tinted windows and government-style license plates had swerved directly across the road, violently cutting off the taxi.
Before the terrified taxi driver could even honk, the doors of the Range Rover flew open.
Two men in identical dark suits stepped out. They didn't look like standard bodyguards;they moved with the cold, mechanical precision of paramilitary operators.
One of them marched straight to the back door of the taxi and ripped it open.
"Ms. Wilder," the security chief said. His voice was flat, offering no respect. He deliberately used her maiden name. "Madame Germaine requires your presence in the main house. Immediately. It concerns the public relations disaster you caused at the gala."
Elisa looked at the man's large hand gripping the door frame.
She didn't argue. She didn't panic. She knew fighting Germaine's thugs on a private road was pointless.

She calmly reached into her purse, pulled out a twenty-dollar bill, and handed it to the shaking driver.
She stepped out of the taxi. Her black stiletto heels crunched against the gravel.
She ignored the security guards completely, walking past them with her chin held high.
She navigated the sprawling, perfectly manicured French maze garden. The towering hedges felt like prison walls. She approached the massive, gothic-style main house. The grey stone absorbed the sunlight, radiating a cold, oppressive energy.
A maid silently opened the heavy oak front doors.
Elisa stepped into the grand foyer. The air smelled of old money, beeswax polish, and decay.①
She walked toward the main parlor.
The second her foot crossed the threshold into the room, a sharp whistling sound cut through the air.
Elisa instinctively jerked her head to the left.
A delicate, incredibly expensive Wedgwood porcelain teacup flew past her ear. It smashed violently against the wooden doorframe behind her, exploding into a hundred razor-sharp shards.
Fine porcelain dust rained down on her shoulder.

"You vicious,attention-seeking whore!"
Meredith Hastings was standing in the center of the parlor. Her face was contorted into a mask of absolute, screaming fury. Her chest heaved under her silk blouse.
"You couldn't stand it, could you?!" Meredith shrieked, pointing a shaking finger at Elisa."You saw Allena getting the respect she deserves, and you had to play the hero! You embarrassed her in front of the entire medical board!"
Elisa stood perfectly still amidst the broken porcelain. She didn't flinch. She didn't even blink.
"Because of your little stunt," Meredith screamed, taking a step closer, "the underground blogs are calling Allena a fraud! And August is taking it out on my son! Julian's trust fund is frozen because of you!"Elisa looked at the hysterical woman.
A cold, mocking smile touched the corners of Elisa's lips.
"Are you finished?" Elisa asked. Her voice was dangerously quiet, cutting through Meredith's screaming like a scalpel.
Meredith stopped, panting heavily.
"Your son is a useless parasite," Elisa said, her words dripping with pure contempt. "And that fake docto you're all protecting is a lethal idiot. Do you really think I give a damn about your family's pathetic internal politics?"
The absolute disrespect in Elisa's voice hit Meredith like a physical blow.
Meredith let out a feral screech. She lunged forward, raising her right hand high, aiming a vicious,open-handed slap directly at Elisa's face.

Elisa was ready.
She didn't block it this time. She didn't step back.
Elisa planted her feet, twisted her hips, and swung her own left hand in a brutal, lightning-fast arc.
Crack.
The sound of the slap echoed like a gunshot in the cavernous parlor.
Elisa's palm connected solidly with Meredith's perfectly powdered cheek. The kinetic force of the blow was immense.
Meredith's head snapped to the side. She lost her balance, her expensive heels twisting under her weight. She crashed hard onto the Persian rug, clutching her face, her eyes wide with absolute, paralyzed shock.
"What the hell is going on here?!"
A voice roared from the grand staircase.
August was taking the stairs two at a time. He was wearing a dark, unbuttoned dress shirt, his face dark with fury.
He had heard the crash of the teacup and the sharp crack of the slap.

He stormed into the parlor. He saw his aunt sprawled on the floor, a bright red handprint blooming on her cheek. And he sawElisa standing over her, looking completely unbothered.
August rushed forward and grabbed Meredith by the arm, hauling her up from the floor.
He turned his head, fixing Elisa with a glare of pure, concentrated hatred.
His eyes flickered to the shattered porcelain on the floor, then back to Elisa's cold face. "Not only do you assault my family," he snarled, his voice vibrating with rage, "you come into my family's home and destroy it? Are you completely out of your mind? You are a psychotic bitch."
Elisa looked at her husband.
She looked at the man who always, without fail, arrived at the end of a conflict and immediately convicted her without asking a single question.
She felt a strange sensation in her chest. It wasn't anger. It was profound, exhausting boredom.
She didn't defend herself. She didn't explain that Meredith threw a cup at her head. It didn't matter anymore.
Elisa slowly opened her leather clutch.
She pulled out a small, individually wrapped sanitizing wet wipe.
She tore the foil packet open. She pulled out the alcohol-soaked cloth.

While maintaining dead eye contact with August,Elisa began to slowly, meticulously wipe down the palm and fingers of her left hand-the hand that had just struck his aunt.
She wiped it as if she had just touched raw sewage.
The sheer, staggering level of physical disgust in her action hit August harder than a punch to the throat.
His jaw dropped slightly. The angry words died on his tongue.
"I'm going to have you thrown out of New York!"Meredith sobbed, hiding behind August's broad shoulder.
August's rage reignited. He dropped Meredith's arm and took a menacing step toward Elisa, reaching out to grab her wrist.
Elisa stopped wiping her hand.
Her eyes turned into black ice.
"Touch me," Elisa whispered, her voice dropping to a lethal, vibrating frequency. "Touch me, August, and I will walk straight out of this house and file a police report for assault. I will drag your precious name through a criminal court."
August's hand froze in mid-air.
He stared at her. The woman standing in front of him was a complete stranger. The submissive,eager-to-please wife was dead. This woman was a predator, and she was entirely unafraid of him.

A cold, sickening wave of powerlessness washed over August. His fingers twitched.
Elisa crumpled the used wet wipe into a ball.
She tossed it perfectly into a crystal wastebasket near the sofa.
"I'm going to see your mother now," Elisa said, her voice flat. "Try to keep the trash off the floor while I'm gone."
She turned her back on him and walked out of the parlor, heading down the long hallway toward Germaine's study.
August stood frozen on the Persian rug.
He listened to the sharp, steady click of her heels fading away.
He realized, with a sudden, terrifying clarity, that she wasn't throwing a tantrum. She wasn't trying to make him jealous.
She truly, completely, did not care if he existed.
His chest tightened painfully. He couldn't breathe.
