Chapter 230

8:45 AM.
The sky over Manhattan was a bruised, violent purple. A torrential rainstorm battered the city, sending sheets of freezing water lashing against the concrete.
Elisa walked up the wide, granite steps of the Manhattan Family Court building. She wore a sharp, black trench coat, her hair pulled back tightly. She didn't carry an umbrella. She let the cold rain hit her face, grounding her, keeping her hyper-focused.
She walked through the heavy glass doors and approached the metal detectors. She placed her bag on the belt and walked through. The machine emitted a soft beep. She grabbed her bag and walked directly toward the elevators.
Her heart was beating a steady, powerful rhythm. This was it. The finish line.
She rode the elevator to the third floor and walked
down the long, echoing corridor. At the very end of the hall was the Case Records Clerk's Window, shielded by thick, bulletproof glass.

She looked at the digital clock on the wall.8:59 AM.
She stood in front of the glass, her hands resting on the cold metal counter. She watched the seconds tick down.
9:00 AM.
Elisa slid her New York State ID and the printed case number slip through the narrow slot at the bottom of the glass.
"Good morning," Elisa said. Her voice was calm, but her fingers trembled slightly against the metal. "I am here to pick up the final, certified copy of the sealed separation injunction for Wilder v. Chambers."
The clerk, an older woman wearing thick reading glasses, took the slip. She turned to her outdated computer terminal and began typing. The clacking of the keyboard sounded like a countdown in Elisa's ears.
Elisa took a deep breath, ready to feel the weight of

the paper in her hands.
The clerk stopped typing. She frowned, leaning closer to the screen. She hit another key, her frown deepening.
"I'm sorry, Ms. Wilder," the clerk said, her voice muffled through the speaker system. She looked up through the bulletproof glass. "The system shows that the final decree, including all certified physical copies, was already picked up."
Elisa blinked. Her brain failed to process the words.
"Excuse me?" Elisa asked, her voice rising slightly."That's impossible. That is a highly classified, sealed legal document. Only August Chambers or I have the legal authority to retrieveit."
The clerk sighed, her face impassive. "Ma'am, the log simply states the documents were retrieved this morning by a legally authorized representative. If you have a dispute, you'll need to contact your own legal counsel for verification. I can't give you any more information."
"By who?" Elisa demanded. She slammed her hands flat against the metal counter, her voice echoing

loudly in the quiet hallway.
The clerk recoiled slightly, intimidated by Elisa's sudden intensity. She turned back to her screen, refusing to make eye contact.
"As I said, I cannot disclose that information. Please speak with your attorney."
The words hit Elisa like a physical bullet to the brain.
A legally authorized representative. The phrase was cold, clinical, and utterly terrifying.
The Chambers Family Trust.
The blood drained from Elisa's face so fast she felt the room spin. Her knees buckled, and she had to grip the edge of the counter to stay standing.

August didn't do this. August was too arrogant to use the family trust for a personal divorce.
This was Germaine Chambers.
The matriarch of the family had bypassed August entirely. She had used the absolute, god-like legal power of the family trust to intercept the documents before they could be handed over.
If Germaine held the physical order and had the power to intercept a sealed electronic filing, the legal shield Elisa had desperately counted on to protect Kayden was gone. She was still legally chained to the Chambers empire.
Pure, blinding panic exploded in Elisa's chest.
She spun away from the window. She ripped her phone out of her pocket. Her fingers shook violently as she dialed August's private, encrypted number. She needed to know if he was part of this, or if his mother was playing them both.
She held the phone to her ear, her breathing shallow and ragged.

The line didn't ring.
Instead, a single, flat tone played, followed by a cold, robotic female voice.
"The number you are trying to reach has activated a private encryption mode. All unauthorized communications are being blocked."
Elisa stared at the phone screen in absolute horror. She hit redial.
"...has activated a private encryption mode..."
The memory of yesterday afternoon crashed into her mind. Allena clinging to his arm. I have that suite at The Plaza waiting for us tonight.
August had sealed himself off fromn the world. He had completely vanished off the grid to spend an uninterrupted, romantic weekend with his mistress, completely unaware that his mother had just hijacked their legal separation.

Elisa stood completely alone in the center of the courthouse hallway. The sounds of lawyers talking and phones ringing faded into a dull, distant static.
She had no shield. She had no leverage. She had no husband to threaten.
She was completely exposed, and Germaine Chambers held all the cards.
Outside, the storm raged, the rain hammering against the thick glass windows. It had just escalated to a level of hell she wasn't prepared for.
