Chapter 182

The automatic doors of the Mather Medical Center slid open, hitting Elisa with a blast of damp, freezing morning air. The Manhattan sky was a bruised purple, heavy with the threat of more rain.

She pulled the collar of her trench coat up,shivering as the cold bit into her exhausted body. The adrenaline from the ER confrontation and the launch of the Achilles Heel protocol was fading fast. What was left behind was a deep, nauseating ache in her lower back. The carbon-fiber brace felt like a cage of hot iron squeezing her ribs.

She needed to get to her car. She needed to get to the safe house and see Kayden. She pulled her phone from her pocket and quickly typed a message to Jewel: "I'm out. Heading to the VIP parking lot now." Jewel had been frantic with worry, waiting in her car nearby, refusing to leave the perimeter until she knew Elisa was safe.

Elisa walked across the wet asphalt of the VIP parking lot. Her silver Porsche was parked near the back wall. She reached into her pocket, her fingers brushing the cold metal of her keys.

A massive engine roared to life.

A black Maybach, its windows tinted pitch black, suddenly accelerated from the opposite row. It cut across the lanes with aggressive speed and

slammed on its brakes, blocking her Porsche completely.

Elisa stopped. Her hand tightened around the keys.

The rear door of the Maybach opened.

Arthur Sinclair stepped out. He leaned heavily on a silver-tipped cane, his face pale from his recent heart attack, but his eyes were sharp and filled with the predatory greed of a Wall Street shark. He wore a heavy cashmere overcoat over his suit.

Right behind him stepped Rosalind Sinclair. She wore a pristine white Chanel suit and carried a Birkin bag, looking completely out of place in the damp hospital parking lot.

They did not look at Elisa with gratitude. Arthur Sinclair had no idea that the woman standing in front of him was the one who had saved his life at the gala. He only saw the discarded wife of August Chambers.

Two massive private security guards stepped out of the front doors of the Maybach, moving silently to flank Elisa, cutting off her path back to the hospital entrance.

"Ms. Wilder," Rosalind said, her voice dripping with fake, aristocratic politeness. "We need a moment of your time."

Elisa looked at the man who had abandoned her and her dying mother twenty years ago. The biological father who had traded them for the woman standing next to him. A wave of pure, toxic

hatred rolled through her stomach.

"Move your car," Elisa said, her voice a low, dangerous rasp.

Arthur let out a dry, dismissive chuckle. He stepped closer, the rubber tip of his cane scraping against the wet pavement.

"You are in no position to make demands, little girl,"Arthur Sinclair said. "The Chambers Group stock is in freefall this morning. August is bleeding capital. He's made his choice, and it wasn't you. How long do you think your marital status will protect that little gallery of yours now?"

Rosalind reached into her Birkin bag. She pulled out a thick stack of legal documents bound in ablue folder and a heavy gold fountain pen.

"This is a Deed of Transfer," Rosalind said, holding the folder out. "You will sign over the absolute ownership of the Ainsworth Antique Gallery to Allena. Consider it a necessary engagement gift to compensate for the trouble you have caused."

Elisa stared at the blue folder.

The gallery. The last physical connection to her grandfather. The vault that held her mother's diaries and the remnants of a family Arthur had destroyed.

The sheer, breathtaking audacity of the demand made the blood pound in Elisa's ears. They were not just stealing her husband; they were trying to strip the gold from her mother's grave.

"You are delusional," Elisa whispered, her eyes locking onto Arthur's. "I will burn that gallery to the ground before I let your parasite of a daughter step foot inside it."

Arthur Sinclair's face hardened into a mask of cold fury. He gave a sharp, subtle nod to the guards.

The two massive men moved instantly. They 84epped up on either side of Elisa. Each guard >rgrabbed one of her shoulders with brutal, crushing force, pinning her in place.

uoisa let out a choked, agonizing gasp. Her knees niA ickled, but the guards held her up, their massive en ands acting like vices on her collarbones. Cold o付 seat instantly broke out across her forehead. The sulay morning sky spun wildly above her.

tesign the paper, Elisa," Rosalind said, stepping right lusv' to her, holding the pen inches from her face.snmugust is on our side now. Do this the easy way,we will let his lawyers tear you apart in court.e gallery will be ours by noon regardless."

isa's vision was swimming with black spots. The in in her spine was a blinding white fire. But 19drough the agony, the absolute, unyielding core of ir hatred remained intact.

She forced her head up. She looked Rosalind dead in the eye.

Elisa ripped her right arm free from the guard's grip with a sudden, violent twist that sent another shockwave of agony through her back.

She snatched the blue folder from Rosalind's hand.

Before Rosalind could smile, Elisa gripped the thick stack of legal paper with both hands. She engaged every muscle in her arms and ripped the entire document straight down the middle.

The sound of tearing paper was loud in the quiet parking lot.

Elisa shoved the torn halves together and ripped themn again. She threw the shredded pieces of the contract directly into Rosalind's face.

The sharp edge of the heavy paper sliced across Rosalind's perfectly powdered cheek, leaving a thin, bright red line of blood.

Rosalind shrieked, stumbling backward and dropping her Birkin bag into a puddle.

Arthur Sinclair's face turned purple with rage. He raised his heavy silver-tipped cane, aiming directly for Elisa's face.

The roar of a massive engine cut through the air.

A bright red Range Rover jumped the concrete curb of the parking lot. It accelerated wildly, tires screaming against the wet asphalt, and slammed on its brakes inches from the side of the Maybach.

The driver's door flew open. Jewel Gilmore jumped out.

She was not holding a phone or a legal document. She was holding a solid alumninum baseball bat.

Jewel charged forward like a rabid animal, swinging the bat and smashing it violently against the Maybach's side mirror, shatteringit into a hundred pieces.

"Get your hands off her!" Jewel screamed, pointing the bat directly at Arthur's chest. "Back the fuck up right now, or I swear to God I will cave your skull in and let the New York Times take the pictures!"

The two guards immediately released Elisa and stepped in front of Arthur, reaching into their jackets.

Arthur Sinclair looked at the wild, screaming woman with the bat. He looked at the hospital security cameras mounted on the walls. He could not afford a physical altercation in public.

He lowered his cane. He looked at Elisa, who was swaying on her feet, her face the color of ash.

"This isn't over," Arthur Sinclair said, his voice cold and final. "August will handle you."

He turned and helped the bleeding Rosalind into the Maybach. The guards jumped in, and the car sped away, leaving a trail of shredded paper in the puddles.

The moment the taillights disappeared, the adrenaline holding Elisa upright vanished.

The white fire in her spine consumed her entirely.

No.7

The world tilted violently. Her legs gave out.

"Elisa!" Jewel screamed, dropping the bat.

Jewel lunged forward, catching Elisa's shoulders just before her head hit the pavement. Elisa's eyes rolled back. The cold, wet asphalt faded into absolute, merciful darkness.
