Chapter 167

No.1

The private dining room at the upscale Manhattan restaurant was bathed in warm, golden light. Crystal glasses clinked, and the low hum of wealthy, self-important conversation filled the air. The documentary crew, JHU executives, and Aethel staff were mingling, celebrating the end of the first filming phase.

Elisa walked through the heavy oak doors. She wore a simple, high-necked black dress that concealed her back brace perfectly.

Before she could even step fully into the room, a large hand clamped down on her upper arm.

The grip was brutal, fingers digging into her muscle. She was yanked violently to the side, pulled through a narrow doorway, and shoved into a dimly lit service pantry.

Her back hit the tiled wall. The impact sent a jarring shockwave through her spine, but the brace absorbed the worst of it.

August stood over her, his chest heaving. The ambient light from the hallway caught the furious, paranoid gleam in his eyes.

"I saw the way you looked at her. You did this to humiliate Allena, didn't you?" he continued, his voice a venomous whisper. "You orchestrated that little trip just to get a reaction out of me on camera."

He pressed his forearm against the wall next to her head, trapping her.

"You are still my wife. Your public disgrace is my disgrace. Don't think for one second that was about you. If you think for one second you can use this...this accident... to upset her or make her doubt me,l will personally end you. I will tie you up in litigation until you are bankrupt and broken."

Elisa looked at his flushed face. The sheer arrogance, the absolute delusion of the man, was almost comical.

She let out a short, dry laugh. It was a sound completely devoid of humor.

"Extort you?" Elisa said, her voice dripping with pure, unadulterated disgust. "Having your hands on me

makes my skin crawl. The only thing that video proves is that you have the impulse control of a rabid dog.Keep your delusions to yourself."

She shoved his arm away with a sharp, violent motíon. She smoothed the front of her black dress, gave him one last look of utter contempt, and walked out of the pantry.

She entered the main dining room and found a small table in the darkest corner. She sat down, her eyes scanning the room.

Allena was seated at the center table, surrounded by the director and producers, laughing loudly and soaking up the attention.

Across the room, hidden behind a velvet curtain near the AV control booth, Jewel caught Elisa's eye. Jewel gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod.

It was time.

The director tapped his spoon against his champagne glass. The room quieted down.

"Thank you all for an amazing first week," the director announced, smiling at Allena. "We've put

together a quick sizzle reel of some behind-the-scenes moments to celebrate our star."

The lights in the dining room dimmed. The massive LED screen on the far wall flickered to life.

It started with a montage of Allena looking thoughtful in the lab. But five seconds in, the screen glitched. A harsh burst of static filled the speakers.

The image changed.

It was the hallway.

But this wasn't the blurry, shaky cell phone video that had been circulating all day. This was the raw, uncompressed 4K footage from the professional Steadicam rig. The lighting had been digitally enhanced. The image was crystal clear.

And it was playing in slow motion.

The entire restaurant fell dead silent.

On the massive screen, Elisa's heel slipped. She began to fall forward.

Then,August entered the frame.

In high definition, slowed down to half speed, the truth was undeniable. He didn't just reach out to catch a falling employee.

His face was contorted in absolute, primal terror. He lunged with explosive force. His arms wrapped around her waist with desperate, crushing possessiveness. His hand buried itself in her hair, pulling her face securely against his chest.

It was the body language of a man protecting something he could not bear to lose.

The video continued. The camera panned slightly as Allena walked into the frame.

The slow motion captured the exact micro-expression on August's face when he heard Allena scream. The terror vanished, replaced instantly by guilt and panic. He shoved Elisa away from him as if she were made of fire, his movements jerky and cowardly.

The video looped, playing the sequence again.

The lie was dead. The narrative of the "desperate seductress" was shattered into a million pieces. The screen proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that

August Chambers was the one who couldn't control his instincts.

A collective gasp rippled through the dining room.Dozens of heads turned slowly to look at Allena.

Allena sat frozen at the center table. All the color drained from her face, leaving her looking like a wNax corpse. Her hand trembled violently.

The crystal champagne flute slipped from her fingers. It hit the floor and shattered, the sound echoing loudly in the stunned silence.

She turned her head slowly and looked at August, who had just walked out of the pantry.

August stared at the massive screen. His face was a mask of absolute horror. The private, uncontrollable truth of his own body had just been broadcast to everyone he cared about impressing.

In the dark corner of the room, Elisa picked up her water glass. She took a slow, elegant sip, her cold eyes watching the empire of lies burn.②
