Chapter 134

No.1

Allena's insult, sharp and public, hung in the air like a foul smell.

Elisa didn't even flinch. She simply looked at Allena, her gaze flat and dismissive, as if studying a particularly uninteresting insect under glass. The lack of reaction was more insulting than any retort. It rendered Allena completely insignificant.

Infuriated by the dismissal, Allena turned to August, her face a mask of petulant complaint. "August, can you believe her arrogance?"

August's eyes were locked on Elisa, cold and hard with a warning. "This isn't the ER, Elisa," he said, his voice a low growl. "You're out of your depth.Know your place." 3

A flicker of something-not amusement, but a deep, cosmic irony-danced in Elisa's eyes. Her lips curved into a smile so faint it was barely there.

"My place," she said, her voice crisp and clear,"is as the Chief Technical Architect for Aethel Intelligence.Nowv, I'm a bit confused, Mr. Chambers.Did you have a technical question about our predictive modeling, or are you just lost?"

No.2

August froze. Chief Technical Architect. The words didn't compute. He knew she'd gotten some pity job from Alastair, but this... this was a position of real power. He had no idea.s

Alastair chose that moment to step smoothly between them, a human shield made of bespoke tailoring and quiet authority.

"As you can see, Faye's schedule is incredibly demanding," Alastair said, his tone polite but with the finality of a slammed door. He addressed August but his eyes were on Allena. "She simply doesn't have time for non-technical inquiries."

The name 'Faye' hung in the air. He then glanced past them toward a sharp-featured woman in an Aethel lab coat who was adjusting a monitor. "Faye, could you please prep the next demo?" The woman nodded and hurried off. The misdirection was seamless,a piece of corporate theater designed to protect his queen. August and Allena still hadn't made the connection. They just saw Alastair protecting his 'employee.'

Allena, ever the opportunist, immediately pivoted. She turned her most brilliant, pleading smile on Alastair.

"Mr. Cromwell, that's actually why we're here!" she gushed, her voice turning syrupy. "I'm Dr. Allena Mills, the lead clinical data consultant for the JHU partnership. I believe a collaboration between my team at Vanguard Medical and your top-tier lab could be revolutionary. If Faye could just guide our data models..."①

No.3

She was asking Faye to help her, without realizing she was asking the woman she'd just called a nurse. The absurdity was breathtaking.

Alastair's eyebrow twitched. "Collaboration is, of course, always on the table," he said, his voice a perfect symphony of Wall Street rhetoric. It sounded positive while promising absolutely nothing. "It must, however, be predicated on symmetrical technical capabilities and strategic alignment. We'll have our people review your proposal."

It was a dismissal, wrapped in a ten-thousand-dollar suit.

Allena's smile faltered. She shot a desperate, pleading look at August. Do something.

August understood. He stepped forward, his posture shifting. He was no longer the scorned husband; he was August Chambers, Titan of Industry.

"My firm, the Chambers Group," he announced, his voice booming with the arrogance of capital,"is prepared to make a significant investment in Aethel's laboratory. A nine-figure injection to facilitate and fast-track this collaboration with Dr.Mills."

No.4

He looked at Alastair, a predator's gleam in his eye.He was trying to buy his way in, to brute-force the door open with his mnoney. "I'm sure you won't turn down a win-win opportunity, Mr. Cromwell."①

Alastair's smile didn't waver. If anything, it became more genuine, more amused.

"We appreciate the generous offer, Mr. Chambers,"he said smoothly. "But as I'm sure you understand

technical partnerships require technical due diligence. Some problems can't be solved by a wire transfer. Now, if you'll excuse us."

The broadcast system crackled to life, announcing the imminent start of the afternoon's keynote address.

"We have a presentation to prepare for," Alastair said, using the announcement as the perfect exit cue. He placed a light hand on Elisa's back and guided her away from the toxic encounter.

No.5

Elisa went with him, walking away without a single backward glance. She had watched the entire exchange with the detached curiosity of a scientist.August, with his checkbook for a brain. Allena, wwith her desperate, grasping ambition. And Alastair, her perfect, beautiful shield, deflecting their clumsy attacks with effortless grace.

It was all so predictable. So pathetic. 2

As they walked away, she could feel August's eyes burning into her back. His knuckles were probably white, his jaw clenched. He had tried to use his greatest weapon-money-and it had been rendered useless.

"That woman is impossible!" Allena hissed to August, her voice a furious whisper. "And what is Elisa doing as her assistant? It's humiliating!"

"Forget her," August snapped, his voice tight with frustration. "Elisa is a nobody. A distraction. We'll find another way to get to Faye."

In the quiet corridor leading to the VIP green room,Alastair leaned in close to Elisa.

No.6

"He really thought he could just buy you," he murmured, his voice a mix of disgust and admiration for her.

Elisa allowed herself a small, cold smile. "Money is the only language they speak, Alastair. But technology is ours. As long as we hold the source code, they'll always be begging at the gates."

"The authority in your voice today, Faye," Alastair said, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "It's even more compelling than youur code."

The smile vanished. "This is just the overture," Elisa said, her voice dropping, becoming hard as diamond. "I'm going to make Allena Mills understand that there are levels to this game she can't even comprehend. Heights she couldn't reach if she stood on a mountain of August's money."

They entered the quiet, cool sanctuary of the VIP room. Elisa immediately started reviewing her presentation slides on a large monitor, her focus absolute.

Alastair took a call, his voice low and clipped. He hung up and turned to her.

No.7

"That was my head of security," he said. "Devon Browning is at the main registration desk. He's asking for the public profile of every Aethel employee. He's digging,Elisa."

Elisa looked up from the screen, a chillingly calm

expression on her face.

"Let him dig," she said. "All he'll find is Faye's brilliance and Elisa's mediocrity. The perfect camouflage."
